They could also include teachers from Hogwarts such as Professor Dumbledore and Professor Snape. The youngsters at the parties could dress up as harry potter and his friends. Harry Potter Party Games could include:
Harry Potter's Wizards Hats memory game A line of about a dozen wizards hats is placed down the centre of the room. Sweets are placed under each hat. There should be six types of sweets and two of each sweet. The players have to answer questions about Harry Potter. If they answer correctly they are allowed to pick up two wizards hats. If the sweets under each hat are the same then they keep them. If they are different they put the hats back and the next player has to answer a question. Play continues until all the sweets have been won.
Harry Potter's Treasure Map Obtain a large, child's chalk board. One side is a blackboard surface, the other side is a white board. On the whiteboard side draw a treasure map using a black permanent marker pen. You could base this map on the marauder's map of Hogwarts school of witchcraft and wizardry which Harry Potter and his friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger attend. Write each child's name on a small sticky label and get them in turn to put their label on the map where they think that the treasure is buried. On the blackboard side of the board you have a small sticky label stuck where the treasure is buried. At the end of the games session, you award a prize to the person who has placed their sticker the closest to the sticker on the back of the board.
Harry Potter Look-alike Competition If the party is going to be in fancy dress then have a competition to see which boy looks the most like Harry Potter and which girl looks the most like Hermione Granger. This would be a good excuse to give away a slightly larger prize to the winners.
Harry Potter's Musical Pass The Parcel Instead of a parcel get the children to pass round a large rubber spider or bat. When the music stops, whoever is left holding the bat or spider is out of the game. They do a forfeit if the spider or bat stops on them, such as stand on one leg or whistle a tune, then they get a small prize and sit out while the game continues.
Team Games Divide the group into four teams. Each team can be given the name of one of the four houses at Hogwarts. These are Slytherin, Griffindor, Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff. The easiest way to do this is to get the children to stand in a line and then number them off all the way along the line 1, 2 , 3, 4, 1, 2, 3, 4 etc. All the number ones would be in Slytherin house, all the number twos would be in Griffindor house, all the number threes would be in Ravenclaw house and all the number fours would be in Hufflepuff house.
Variation on Quidditch Quidditch is the game played at Hogwarts. Two teams of seven people sit on broomsticks and four balls are used. Obviously the children at the party can't fly so try this as the next best thing. Have three hoops or rings at each end of the playing area. The object of the game is to get a balloon or quaffle through all the hoops to score a point. Players can only use their hands to hit the quaffle. The two teams who are not playing stand each side of the play area and throw two soft foam rubber balls or bludgers at the playing teams. Using a soft sponge ball avoids injuries and breakages. Players who have been hit by a bludger have to stay out of play for one minute. This variation on quidditch does not use the fourth ball which is called the golden snitch but it is still great fun to play. Harry Potter Quiz Test your knowledge with a Harry Potter Quiz. You could give harry potter themed prizes, such as wands or wizard hats to the highest score.
